Research activity in 1997
The research has been carried on pluridimensional signals involving images and sound. In the images area the interest is focoused on three main subjects: pattern recognition, compression and images’ synthesis. The first subject has been appling to biomedical and pictorical images while the two others are referred to virtual reality domain. The aim of the computer music study is the creation of instruments’ physical models.
The main topics of the research are:
a) improvement and study of new pattern recognition algorithms applied to biomedical, archaeological and pictorial images;
b) compression and reconstruction of statical images and movies, both monocromatic and coloured, using Loeve Karhunen expansion based on universal set of eigenvalue functions;
c) study of the separable Karhunen Loeve transform for the application to the compression of true color images;
d) development of a compresssion algorithm that uses L.K. transform and applies adaptive techniques based on fuzzy logic;
e) application of vector quantizers based on clustering techniques in the fuzzy logic domain;
f) application of fractal techniques (based on Iterated Function Systems) to image recognition, applied to the OCR problem (digit recognition)
f) study and creation of hypermedial didactive modules for normal children and with handycap;
g) project of prototipal virtual reality modules;
h) upgrading of a package for image processing, developed by the researchers and running on Windows PC, with algorithms in the spatial and frequencies domain;
i) application of image processing technique in forensic medicine;
l) synthesis of sounds through physical models of the instruments: the main result is a physical model of the plucked string, including a model of the finger, and the application to a simulation of the classical guitar;
m) automatic execution of scores, through the application of expressive deviations learned via a quantitative analysis of real performances
