Research activity in 1998

The principal result of our research in 1998 was included in the doctoral thesis of Davide Cavagnino, for which Albert Werbrouck was the adviser. The title of the thesis is "Development of a Color Image Compression Technique based on Separable Karhunen Loève Transform and Fuzzy Logic".

This thesis represents a novel approach in using the highly adaptive Karhunen Loève Transform to compress color images by treating vertical, horizontal and color information separately to reduce the computational time and transmission bandwidth. The main results of this thesis were presented at the 5^th International Workshop on System, Signals and Image Processing, IWSSIP'98, pp. 235-238, in Zagrabia, Croatia.

We have been collaborating with a group of physics researchers of the INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) in the definition of procedures to compress data collected in the High Energy physics experiment ALICE to be run at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN (Centro Europeo di Ricerca Nucleare). The first report has been deposited as the ALICE Experiment Internal note, INT98-41.ps.CERN.

An alternative proposal to be compared with the first is in preparation.
