Research activity in 1999

We continued the collaboration with the I.N.F.N. (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) group (Turin section) in preparing the ALICE experiment (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) for the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) in construction at CERN (Centro Europeo per la Ricerca Nucleare). During the year 1999 we developed and simulated a new algorithm for the compression of data that will be acquired by a solid state detector. The main aspect of this algorithm is that the compressed data maintain the information necessary to restore the signal clusters in two dimensions (space and time), along with the monitoring of the background signal. The necessity to satisfy real time constraints has led to complete the algorithm with designs of fast electronic circuits.
