Ph.D. programs have been introduced in Italian Universities only in 1982. Since the very beginning the Dipartimento di Informatica of Università di Torino has been active in promoting and organizing the Ph.D. School in Computer Science at Università di Torino.

Since 1999 the Ph.D. program in Computer Science is run in consortium with the Computer Science group of Università del Piemonte Orientale, who nominates some members of the Committee (Collegio Docenti). Most of the Committee members are nominated by Dipartimento di Informatica. The goal of the Ph.D. program is to provide Ph.D. students with a solid knowledge and understanding of different areas of Computer Science and with the ability to carry on state-of-the-art research in one of the areas.

In order to fulfill this goal, the Ph.D. program has been organized according to these main characteristics:

  • The Ph.D. program requires Ph.D. students to attend graduates courses offered directly by the Dipartimento di Informatica and by other National and International Summer Schools (in particular the Bertinoro International Summer School for graduate studies in Computer Science jointly organized by the Italian Ph.D. programs - included Torino)
  • Joint research activity between the members of the Department and the Ph.D. students in projects of national interest and/or in international projects (particularly relevant the ones supported by European Union since they provide an international context where universities, research centers and industries work together). The cooperation between members of the Department and the Ph.D. students has been successful as shown by the many joint papers are witnesses of this collaboration. The success of our Ph.D. Program is also shown by the high number of past Ph.D. students who actually have academic position in Italy or in foreign countries.
  • Attention to applied research and co-operation with industries and research centers. In the last few years some Ph.D. are working in private research centers or industries. Moreover, in 2001 Telecom Italia Lab has granted a three-year fellowship to a Ph.D. student for investigating the area of Knowledge Management
  • Internationalization. The Department offers a wide range of international contacts via projects supported at the international level and Networks of Excellence. Moreover, the Ph.D. students are encouraged to spend few months in a foreign university or research center well known in the area of interest of the Ph.D. student. The Ph.D. program in Computer Science of Università di Torino pays attention to co-operation with other Ph.D. programs. Since 1999 our PhD is member of the Italian interuniversitary Partnership (IP) of the European Educational Forum (EEF, http://www.tucs.abo.fi/EEF/). The EEF involves 37 universities in Denmark, The Netherlands, Finland, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. The common denominator of the research schools is the training of Ph.D. students and young researchers. The aim of the EEF is to organize training activities directed at Ph.D. students and young researchers from all over Europe. The research in computer science promoted by all research schools concerns Basic Research and its Applications. During 2001, The Ph.D. program in Computer Science under the umbrella of ISASUT (The Doctoral School of Università di Torino) has signed co-operation agreements with Universite de Savoie (Chambery, France), University of Birmingham (UK) and University of Novi Sad (Yugoslavia).

The board of Ph.D. Program in Computer Science (Collegio Docenti del Dottorato) has been coordinated by Prof. Mariangiola Dezani until beginning of December 2001 and then by Prof. Pietro Torasso. In 2001 the board of Ph.D. Program in Computer Science is composed as follows:
