About the Dept

Computer Science Department is proud to offer its hospitality to the TRAIN TO MOVE international fellowship programme participants!

Since the very beginning (early seventies) the Computer Science Department – Dipartimento di Informatica in Italian – has the task of promoting and coordinating the research in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology at University of Turin – Università di Torino in Italian.
This mission has been achieved by hosting most of the faculty members involved in Computer Science and IT, and organizing the Ph.D. Program in Computer Science since its introduction in Italy in 1984.

The department research activity is carried on by the Faculty members (professors and researches), by Research Assistants (Assegnisti di Ricerca in Italian) and Ph.D. students supported by a quite large administrative and ICT staff. Currently, the Department involves 74 faculty members and a large number of research assistants and Ph.D. students.

In 2013, the Computer Science Department has started to classify its activities according to the classification introduced by European Union (in particular the ERC keywords).
It is not a surprise that most of the research activities carried on fall within the scope of PE6 - Computer Science and Informatics.
While most of the topics listed in PE6 are covered at some extent, it is worth noting that the largest number of people are working in the following topics:

  • PE6_2 Computer systems, parallel/distributed systems, sensor networks, embedded systems, cyber-physical systems;
  • PE6_4 Theoretical computer science, formal methods, and quantum computing;
  • PE6_7 Artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, multi agent systems;
  • PE6_8 Computer graphics, computer vision, multi media, computer games;
  • PE6_9 Human computer interaction and interface, visualization and natural language processing;
  • PE6_10 Web and information systems, database systems, information retrieval and digital libraries, data fusion;
  • PE6_13 Bioinformatics, biocomputing, and DNA and molecular computation.

The research activity of the Computer Science Department has a strong multidisciplinary approach. Actually, a relevant number of people is working on research topics arising in Social Science and Humanities (SH1 – SH5), in Mathematics (PE1), in Engineering related topics (PE7 – PE8), in Life Science (LS2, LS7).

The research carried out at Computer Science Department had a wide impact on the research community.
In 2012-2013, the department members published their main results on more than 300 scientific publications (journal articles, conference proceedings, book chapters). Further, about 20 research softwares and 4 patents.
The majority of these scientific results are obtained within funded research projects.
At the present moment, the Computer Science Department is involved in EU, National and Regional projects.
