ENGLISH II (inglese avanzato)

ATTENZIONE:
le esercitazioni di Lingua Inglese II saranno offerte per l'ultima volta nell'anno accademico 2009-2010.
Gli studenti del II anno Sistemi e Reti devono richiedere l'anticipo di frequenza per Lingua Inglese II (che per SR è previsto al III anno) così da poter seguire le esercitazioni nel 2009-2010.
Per richiedere l'anticipo di frequenza, rivolgersi alla Segreteria Didattica del CCS (http://www.educ.di.unito.it/NewsEvents/getDoc.php?id=1106) seguendo le istruzioni per le modifiche al piano carriera 09-10, che saranno possibili presumibilmente da novembre 2009 a gennaio 2010.

Timetable

Lessons: from 20/04/09 to 01/07/09 on Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM; tutoring from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Dipartimento di Informatica, via Pessinetto 12, aula C.

Objectives

The objective of the module is to observe the structure of scientific writing by analyzing the format of a paper and the function of each section within a paper.

Further analysis will look at the language used in scientific and technical texts in order to develop efficient academic skills. Grammar items to be covered in the module include:

• revision of verb tenses, (present, simple past and present perfect) in both the active and passive forms;
  • modals;
• frequent mistakes such as the use of the determinate article, practice of the comparative, prepositions and commonly used collocations;
• language used for signposting and linking and the appropriate use of academic register and sentence types and length;
• writing of scientific numbers and use of Latinates.

It will also be possible to evaluate elective writing assignments in technical English during the workshop.

7. Numbers in Written Form;
8. Scientific Worthiness, Reliability of Sources;
9. Why am I reading what I am reading?
10. Most Frequent Mistakes.

Exam

Translation (in 1 hour) from Italian into English of a text of scientific topic. The use of a personal dictionary will be allowed.
