Effecting Affect
Abstract:
I will reflect on more than twenty years of collaborating with artists to create, tour and study interactive performances and installations to consider how they ‘effect affect’ – that is the strategies that they employ to deliver compelling emotional experiences. I will reflect on the nature of affective loops in which computers both sense and intervene in our emotional experiences, focusing on how emerging bodily interfaces that involve both physiological sensing and bodily actuation are leading to ever more tightly coupled interactions that play with the boundaries of control to provoke emotional responses.
