Optimization of the collection and disposal of recyclable waste

The EURO initiative "24 Hours Operations Research" was aimed to present a collection of operational research problems faced in everyday life with the appropriate solution approaches in order to contribute to ongoing work on promoting and branding OR. Our project, in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, Università di Ferrara, concerns the optimization of the collection and disposal of recyclable waste. Consider a fleet of homogeneous vehicles hosted at a single depot, where spare empty containers are located and are available in limited quantity for each type. A set of service requests, one for each full container located at a recycling and disposal station, must be fulfilled.

From this work, we published a paper [ DOI ] on Transportation Science. The instances used in the paper are available here (E1LCRP section).
